Week 4

April 29

Today is travel day to Kanarraville, UT.  After eating supper we headed out to Kolob Canyon, a northwest section of Zion NP.

" Butterball" ambling down the road.

The reddish area in the center broke off in 1983.

 Looks like a tee pee!

April 30
Today we ventured out east on Scenic Hwy. 14.  Here we are at an elevation of 9,500 ft.
Snow, snow, snow

 Early model RV?
Red Canyon

Bryce Canyon is absolutely stunning.  Fiery colors and endless vistas of fairy tale castle-like formations known as hoodoos describe what many call sacred ground.  Very different from anything we've seen.  We immediately embarked on a 2.6 mile hike into the canyon through Queen's Garden.  It's official -- we hiked the Hoodoos!

Man-made hoodoos

This is where we started the long trek up, up, up.  I literally had to stop every right-to-left pass.
Even though this looks scary (and it was a little) this is nothing compared to what's up next.

This is where we literally hugged the mountain side of the trail!!
That rounded spot behind me went straight down!!
Here's where we had been.

Hoodoos a plenty
 Ponderosa Point

 Natural Bridge

Sheep Creek Swamp Canyon
Antelope in the valley
Bryce Point - the best views of all!
 Look at all the hoodoos
 Paria View
Inspiration Point - well another great view!

A volunteer park ranger told us to make sure and go to Mossey Cave and Waterfall.  So we did and weren't very impressed.  But this formation caught my eye.
After hiking a total of 6 miles today, we are pooped.
May 1
Our day trip today took us north and east.  First to the Eagle Point Ski area in Beaver, UT.
On Scenic Hwy. 143 - Panguitch Lake
Brian Head Summit at 10,571 ft., 31degrees and 30 mph winds.  Brrrrrrrrrrr

 A Mountain Bluebird
It was so cold, I wouldn't get out of the car!
Larry did.
But I finally did get out of the car and took this very quick shot.

 The Summit
 Kind of unusual!!!

May 2
Travel day from Kanarraville to Salt Lake City, UT.  We continue to see snow-capped mountains all along the way.

May 3
The Salt Lake City area is beautiful.  It is surrounded by snow-capped mountains and the Great Salt Lake.  The downtown area is nestled up against the backdrop of the mountains.  For our day trip today we headed back south and east and spotted the Bridal Veil Falls.
Next was Sundance, home to the Sundance Film Festival and the Sundance Resort built by Robert Redford.  No we didn't see him, but I hear he lives there somewhere.
 Sundance Ski Resort
The original film screening room.  The Sundance Film Festival has gotten so big that now most of the activities each January are held in nearby Park City.
Deer Creek Reservoir

Jordanelle Reservoir
Park City - home to the XIX Winter Olympic Games

Back to Salt Lake City
Governor's Mansion
Blooming trees and flowers in Salt Lake City

Our next stop is one of my favorite places to go -- churches.  This is The Cathedral of The Madeleine.  We've seen many beautiful Catholic Churches, but this one ranks right at the top,  Stunning!!

Next stop was Temple Square, home to the world famous Morman Temple and Tabernacle Choir.  Non-members are  not allowed inside.

 Beautiful flowers in the square.
Then on to the Utah State Capitol.
The "Beehive" State
This is the view from the steps of the Capitol -- amazingly beautiful.
Across the street from the Capitol is the Old City Hall.
And our last stop of the day was to the Old Union Pacific Railroad Depot -- now only used for events.

 May 4
Today we ventured out to see The Great Salt Lake via the causeway over to Antelope Island State Park.  The Great Salt Lake is a terminal lake, which means it gets water only from precipitation and snowfall runoff.  It is also a very shallow lake with a mean depth of 13' and 34-40' at its deepest.
Salt deposits from where the lake has dried up.

We saw many bison on the island.
This is my favorite shot of the lake.

 Antelope roaming the island.
This is a Chukar of the Partridge family.  A most unusual looking bird.

Glad we didn't have the RV with us!!!!!
Reflection
Cathy standing on the salt bed - it was very soft so didn't go very far.
Cathy with the Great Salt Lake in the background.  This area was softer than the pic above.  Had to tread lightly!!

 American Avocets
There was a bike race on Antelope Island while we were there.
This was our view from our RV park in North Salt Lake.

May 5
Salt Lake City, UT to Idaho Falls, ID
We had a beautiful drive today.  Seeing snow-capped mountains all around us seems to be the norm lately.
Once we reached our destination, we headed out to Wal-Mart then came back to the RV and relaxed the rest of the day.

Till next week...
